Comparative Biosynthetic Pathways in Higher Plants
نویسنده
چکیده
During the last ten years or so, variation in secondary plant products between different taxa has been increasingly used in systematic and evolutionary studies. However successful this approach has been, it now needs to be tempered by a consideration of the underlying variation in the biosynthetic pathways leading to the compounds in question. In some cases cognate compounds are formed by two or more pathways in different taxa; in others the same biosynthetic route is regulated in different ways. It is necessary, therefore, to examine the ontogeny and characteristics of the individual enzymes involved. Examples of such approaches are given for a large number of different classes of compound. including naphthoquinones, flavonoids, rneta-carhoxv aromatic amino acids, branched chain sugars and lignin.

The expression profile of D4H and DAT genes in Catharanthus roseus in response to drought, salinity and salicylic acid
Catharanthus roseus L. is an important medicinal plant producing several terpenoid indole alkaloids (TIAs) such as vincristine and vinblastine secondary metabolites with anticancer activity. The TIAs biosynthetic pathways are affected by biotic and abiotic stresses. In this study the effect of drought (7 days), salinity (150 mM NaCl), foliar spray of salicylic acid (10-5 M) and salicylic acid i...
متن کاملOmics-Based Comparative Transcriptional Profiling of Two Contrasting Rice Genotypes during Early Infestation by Small Brown Planthopper
The small brown planthopper (SBPH) is one of the destructive pests of rice. Although different biochemical pathways that are involved in rice responding to planthopper infestation have been documented, it is unclear which individual metabolic pathways are responsive to planthopper infestation. In this study, an omics-based comparative transcriptional profiling of two contrasting rice genotypes,...
متن کاملDifferent polyketide folding modes converge to an identical molecular architecture.
Metabolic diversity is being studied intensively by evolutionary biologists, but so far there has been no comparison of biosynthetic pathways leading to a particular secondary metabolite in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. We have detected the bioactive anthraquinone chrysophanol, which serves as a chemical defense in diverse eukaryotic organisms, in a bacterial Nocardia strain, thereby permitt...
متن کاملA sorghum MYB transcription factor induces 3-deoxyanthocyanidins and enhances resistance against leaf blights in maize.
Sorghum responds to the ingress of the fungal pathogen Colletotrichum sublineolum through the biosynthesis of 3-deoxyanthocyanidin phytoalexins at the site of primary infection. Biosynthesis of 3-deoxyanthocyanidins in sorghum requires a MYB transcription factor encoded by yellow seed1 (y1), an orthologue of the maize gene pericarp color1 (p1). Maize lines with a functional p1 and flavonoid str...
متن کاملElucidating gene function and function evolution through comparison of co-expression networks of plants
The analysis of gene expression data has shown that transcriptionally coordinated (co-expressed) genes are often functionally related, enabling scientists to use expression data in gene function prediction. This Focused Review discusses our original paper (Large-scale co-expression approach to dissect secondary cell wall formation across plant species, Frontiers in Plant Science 2:23). In this ...
